Bad King John from Ridgeway Brewing, based in Oxfordshire, has been judged the winner of the Sainsbury’s Great British Beer Hunt.

The beer, described by brewer Peter Scholey as a ‘black bitter’, fought off the challenge of seven other beers in the grand final staged in London. Ridgeway also reached the final with a second beer, Ivanhoe.

Runner-up in the competition was Williams Bros Caesar Augustus, a lager/IPA cross. Both successful beers will now be stocked nationally by Sainsbury’s for at least six months.

Other brewers represented in the final eight were Wye Valley, Harviestoun, Hunter, Joseph Holt and Sadler’s.
