Cask Ale: The Pub Lifeline
News: September 2011
Cask ale is declared to be a ‘lifeline’ for many struggling pubs in this year’s Cask Report. The Report has commissioned a new survey that looks at customer trends and attitudes in pubs and it concludes that pubs stocking cask ales have a distinct advantage over other pubs, largely because of the clientele they attract. The survey has discovered that cask ale drinkers are twice as likely to visit a pub than other drinkers, as their choice of tipple is hard to replicate at home. Additionally, they often bring other drinkers with them to the pub, as they are the ones in a group who make the pub choices. The Report also reveals that cask ale drinkers are more likely to spend more money at a pub and asserts that cask ale is increasingly becoming the drink of younger people, casting aside its ‘flat cap’ image. Cask ale has once again outperformed other types of beer in terms of sales over the past year, with 2,500 pubs added to the number of pubs that sell cask ale. The Cask Report is an annual survey of the cask beer market, funded by CAMRA, SIBA, the Independent Family Brewers of Britain, the Cask Marque Trust and a group of individual breweries. |
