CAMRA Celebrates 40th Birthday
News: March 2011
The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), the consumers’ organisation for users of beer and pubs, is celebrating its 40th birthday. CAMRA was founded as the Campaign for the Revitalisation of Ale in 1971, by four beer lovers who were dismayed at the poor quality of beer increasingly being served in British pubs, as brewers turned to convenience keg products in place of traditional, cask-conditioned ale. The term ‘real ale’ was coined to spell out the difference between the good (cask) and the bad (keg), and was later adopted as part of the organisation’s name. CAMRA membership currently stands at its highest ever level, with 120,000 paid-up supporters. |
