Beer Guide Celebrates Brewery Expansion
News: September 2010
The latest edition of CAMRA’s flagship beer and pubs guide has highlighted the remarkable expansion in the number of small breweries in recent years. Good Beer Guide 2011 notes that 78 breweries opened this year and, even taking into account brewery closures, that means a net increase in breweries of 56 in the last 12 months. The UK now has 767 breweries, four times the number that existed when CAMRA was founded in 1971. The Guide also highlights major brewing success stories, such as the expansion of Acorn Brewery in Barnsley, Yorkshire, which now has a 100-barrel brewhouse, and the fact that Meantime in London, Thornbridge in Derbyshire and Dark Star in Sussex have all moved into major new breweries this year. The 2011 edition of the book features around 4,500 pubs across the UK that sell good quality cask-conditioned beer and includes information on all the country’s breweries. Edited by Roger Protz, it is the 38th edition. |
