Scottish independent brewer WEST is to invest £5 million in a second brewery.

The Glasgow brew pub was founded in a grand Victorian former carpet factory by German Petra Wetzel in 2006 and specialises in bottom-fermented beers brewed in accordance with the Reinheitsgebot beer purity law.

Sales of its main beer, St Mungo, have grown 180% in the past year and now the company is to extend its brewing capacity with a new brewhouse, which is due to open in the city in 2011.

To assist the business’s growth, Richard McLelland has joined as sales director from fellow Scottish micro BrewDog.
