Smuttynose Claims Michael Jackson Award
News: August 2010
A beer from Smuttynose Brewing, of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, has been judged the best American cask beer at CAMRA’s Great British Beer Festival.
Big A, a 9.7% IPA, claimed the Michael Jackson Award, named in memory of the influential beer writer who died in 2007. It is Smuttynose’s third success in this competition, which is judged by the festival’s volunteer workers.
Runner-up was Clipper City’s Heavy Seas Loose Cannon, from Baltimore, Maryland, with Older Viscosity 2009, from Lost Abbey, based in San Marcos, California, claiming third place. More than 180 American craft beers were on sale at this year’s event.
