News: June 2010

One of the Midlands’ longest established breweries is set to close. The Highgate & Davenports Brewery in Walsall has gone into liquidation and more than 20 jobs are likely to be lost.

The Highgate Brewery dates back to 1898 and, noted for its Highgate Mild and Old Ale, was once part of the Bass empire. The company has changed hands a number of times in the last 15 years, most recently in September 2009, when new owners changed the name to Highgate & Davenports, to include the former Birmingham brewery, Davenports, in the title.

The future of the Victorian tower brewery, a listed building, is now in doubt.
