News: June 2010

Chartered accountant Steve Williams has been adopted as London’s new official Ale Taster for 2010.

In centuries past, the ale taster played an important role in ensuring that beer quality in the city was up to standard. Now the position has been revived in mostly ceremonial form, with a competition staged in the Old Spitalfields Market to find the first occupant.

Six contestants battled it out by attempting to spot particular beers in a blind tasting and then making a one-minute presentation to a panel of judges.

Williams, a Justice of the Peace and a former CAMRA Regional Director for London, claimed the title, ahead of runner-up Jane Peyton. His role will include ‘mystery drinker’ assignments to enable him to report back on beer quality in the capital through a dedicated blog page.
