News: April 2010

Anchor Brewing Company, San Francisco’s iconic craft brewery, has been sold to two local entrepreneurs.

The ‘Steam Beer’ business has its roots in the California Gold Rush days but was struggling to survive in the 1960s when Fritz Maytag, a descendent of the Maytag white goods family, acquired a majority shareholding in the business, going on to become full owner.

Under Maytag’s guidance the brewery’s fortunes rose steadily and Maytag has become widely known as the ‘father’ of the US craft brewing movement.

Now Maytag has sold his interest in the business for an undisclosed sum to locally-based The Griffin Group, run by Keith Greggor and Tony Foglio, whose backgrounds are in the spirits industry. Maytag will maintain links with the company in his new role of Chairman Emeritus.
