Sales of craft beer in the USA continued to climb last year, despite the economic downturn, according to figures released by the Brewers Association.

The figures reveal that craft beer sales grew by 7.2% in 2009, a period in which beer sales overall fell by approximately 5 million US barrels. Craft beer in the USA now accounts for 4.3% of the country’s total beer output, with the number of craft brewers rising from 1,485 to 1,542 in 2009.

The Brewers Association defines a craft brewer as an independent business producing fewer than 2 million US barrels a year.
