Cardiff brewer Brains has used St David’s Day (1 March) to release a new beer it hopes will compete favourably with the brew most commonly associated with St Patrick’s Day (17 March).

Brains Black (4.1%) is a nitrokeg stout that is being rolled out to selected pubs this month as a rival to Guinness, with at least 100 outlets scheduled to take the beer by the end of the year.

To emphasis the new stout rivalry, the beer was launched with the help of two former rugby stars – Wales scrum half Robert Jones and Ireland flanker Simon Easterby.
