News: January 2010

UK beer sales fell again in the last quarter of 2009, but not as much as in previous quarters.

Figures released by the British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA) in its Quarterly Beer Barometer show beer sales in all outlets, including pubs and supermarkets, declining by 3.6% over the same period in 2008. Sales for the whole of 2009 were down 4.2%, but this contrasts with a dip of 5.5% in 2008.

The BBPA is taking a positive stance over the figures, claiming that beer’s decline is shallowing out, with Chief Executive Brigid Simmonds stating that the recession and beer duty increases were the main factors responsible for the turn down.
