New Rules for Retailing Alcohol
News: January 2010
A new mandatory drinks code for pubs, clubs and bars has been issued by the UK Government. Although the details are yet to be approved by Parliament, recommendations include a ban on ‘irresponsible’ price promotions, compulsory age checks on customers who appear to be under 18, the option of smaller measures for wines and spirits, and the need for premises to offer free tap water. The proposals are expected to come into effect in two tranches, in April and October. Licensees who flout the new rules face up to a £20,000 fine and/or up to six months in prison. |
