Heineken Buys FEMSA
News: January 2010
Heineken has strengthened its hand in Latin America – and shored up its position as the world's third-largest brewer – with the acquisition of local brewing giant FEMSA in a deal valued at US $7.347 billion (£4.6 billion), including debt.
Mexico-based FEMSA (Fomento Económico Mexicano, SAB de CV) is producer of Sol, Dos Equis and Tecate, among other brands. Heineken already distributes some FEMSA beers in the USA and the two companies share ownership of beer operations in Brazil.
As part of the deal, FEMSA will acquire a 20% holding in Heineken. Pending regulatory approval, the take-over should be approved by the summer.
