Scottish microbrewery BrewDog has released what it claims to be the world’s strongest beer.

Tactical Nuclear Penguin is an imperial stout that has been aged in two whisky casks for a total of 16 months. It weighs in at 32% ABV. The high strength was realised by storing the beer at –20º C.

Alcohol freezes at a lower temperature than water, resulting in ice crystals forming in the beer, making the remaining liquid more concentrated in alcohol. The beer was then decanted, leaving behind the ice. The process was repeated until the required ABV was achieved.

Only 500 bottles have been produced. Half will be sold at £35 per bottle, with the other half sold at £250, to include a share in the brewery as part of the company’s Equity for Punks programme.
