Lambic Comes to London

News: October 2009

Lambic, one of Belgium's most misunderstood and eccentric beer styles, is being celebrated in London in November.

The Rake bar, close to Borough Market, is staging a lambic day on Sunday, 1 November, from noon to 8pm, bringing together a selection of examples of the style.

Lambic is a form of wheat beer that is not fermented with traditional brewers' yeast. Instead, wild yeasts from the atmosphere ferment the beer, which is aged for months in wooden casks. The resultant drink is often sour, acidic and challenging but much sought after by connoisseurs.

The Rake's showcase offers pure lambics, gueuze (a blend of old and young lambic) and fruit beers based on lambic, with beers on sale including offerings from Cantillon, Hanssens, Boon, Girardin, Lindemans and Timmermans breweries. Both draught and bottled examples will be available.
