News: October 2009

A-B InBev, the world’s largest brewer, has taken steps to reduce its debt by selling off its Central European interests for £1.9 billion.

The sale, to venture capitalist firm CVC Capital Partners, sees breweries changing hands in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia and Slovakia.

Included in the package is the Staropramen brewery in Prague, which was acquired by Interbrew (as the company was then known) when it took over Bass’s brewing interests in 2000.

Staropramen will remain part of InBev’s portfolio in the UK, the USA and other major markets, through a distribution deal with the new owners. Similarly, CVC has the rights to brew or market A-B InBev brands such as Stella Artois, Beck’s, Hoegaarden and Leffe, in the areas in which it has taken an interest.
