News: October 2009

Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier has been crowned supreme champion in this year’s International Beer Challenge, the world’s premier annual competition for packaged beer.

The traditional Bavarian weizenbier, from the university town of Freising, just north of Munich, claimed the Best Wheat Beer title and then saw off stiff competition from six other class winners – Fyne Ales Highlander (Best Ale), Boston Beer Samuel Adams Traditional Bock (Best Lager), Harveys Prince of Denmark (Best Stout or Porter), Redoak Framboise Froment (Best Fruit Beer), Thornbridge Bracia (Best Speciality Beer) and Harveys Bill Brewer (Best No- or Low-Alcohol Beer) – to come out on top.

It is the second time in six years that the Weihenstephan beer, brewed in what is claimed to be the oldest brewery in the world, has won the overall title.

Ola Dubh, the oak-aged beer from Harviestoun Brewery, is the overall winner of the packaging competition.
